Jia You! (Ciayo!)

June 23rd, 2009

Lately, these two words have been a favorite in my class. This phrase means something like “Go for it!” or “Keep fighting!

This is actually Chinese, and I suspect a lot of people in Indonesia use it because we learn it from Taiwan and Chinese films.

Anyway, did you know that the literal meaning of these two words is: “Add oil!” ?

Yes, it does literally ask us to add more oil to make the fire (the spirit inside our heart) burn bigger and brighter!

Personally I really like how this phrase has a deep meaning and warms up my heart every time my beloved classmates shout it out!

For you guys who have endless paper to write, JIA YOU!

note: Chinese “J” is read like “C” (in Indonesia) and like “CH” (in English), if that makes sense at all :p

Ella, I’m just trying to let people know what ciayo really means in Chinese. I’m just thinking that not many people know the real meaning, although we say “ciayo!” all the time. So, this post is just like an information. I don’t want you to think hard, actually. Hehee..

Tutu, ciayo! And now you got me thinking about my thesis..
