Dinner Vs. Supper
Dear Indonesian learners of English,
Have you ever wondered the difference between dinner and supper? Well, I’ve always wondered. I once thought that supper is later than dinner, but then from movies and readings, that didn’t seem right. Many English teachers teach that, though.
Luckily, I have this actually-not-so-brilliant idea to ask an American about this. Here goes his explanation:
There is a difference because different people in the US use dinner and supper differently.
Farm folks would have:
Breakfast: morning around 6 am. Big meal.
Lunch: about 10 am. Light meal/snack.
Dinner: at noon. Big meal.
Lunch: about 3 pm. Light meal/snack.
Supper: evening around 6 pm. Big meal, but not as big as Dinner.
City folks would have:
Breakfast: morning at 8-9 am. Light meal.
Lunch: noon. Light meal.
Dinner: usually later at night around 7-8 pm. Big meal.
Now we know where the power of farm folks comes from. They eat five times a day. Wow.
And now we know the difference between dinner and supper. And you can use them in any way you want, really. I just hope this post helps.
Last but not least.
Indonesian people would have:
Breakfast: morning. Big meal. (except for those girls on diet :D)
Lunch: noon. Big meal.
Dinner: evening. Big meal.
I love being Indonesian! Big meals every time! Yay! Now I gotta go have my BIG lunch. See you folks!

just spitting out my mind | Comment (1)The Boyfriend, The Dog, and The Thesis
I am a lazy bum in updating this blog. Really. Anyway, here are some updates of my life (like you people want to know, LOL):
My boyfriend is coming back to Surabaya this July. He’s been in Denpasar since last December. So we’re gonna do things together again after a while. Fun! I am excitedly happy!
(Don’t mind the hair.)

I gave my dog to Mrs. Clara. (The dog just came to my house a couple of months ago and acted as my dog. Weird.)
This is good news and bad news. Good news: nobody really wanted a dog around the house, and he constantly fought with other dogs in the neighborhood. Read: super noisy!
Bad news: I sort of miss him. He can sometimes be very cute. Well..

I’m rather frustrated with my thesis writing. If I am on schedule, I should graduate in November. And up to know, I haven’t written my thesis at all.
Why all the dots in this post? In fact I don’t know how to make this post neat other than by doing that. Please help me if you know how..
Well, How about you guys? What are you doing lately?
just spitting out my mind, my pets, on l.o.v.e | Comments (4)My beloved turtles (1): Stemi the Turtledog!
I always have a guilt for keeping pets. I feel that I have taken away their freedom.
This one baby here in the picture is Stemi. She is an Indotestudo forsteni (Baning Sulawesi) from Sulawesi, known as forsteni turtle, a very cute turtle indeed.
I let her wander around my house to give her freedom, but I don’t understand why she still wants to go out, every single day. What she does everyday is trying to break through the door. And in her vain attempts, she does fall down a couple of times everyday. (Her prison break attempt did succeed twice, although she didn’t get very far before we noticed.)
Everytime someone comes to the house, she always runs (in her limited speed, of course) to reach the door, most probably hoping to sneak through. That is why we call her the Turtledog. She sometimes behaves like a dog.
Food and shelter are provided in my house, Stemi! Don’t you understand?
Now, am I guilty?
.
Note: This post was written on January 2, 2009, but I left in draft and forgot to publish it.
This is now June 25, 2009, and Stemi had already ran away for a couple of months now. She left the house in February. I’ve searched everywhere, asked everyone in my neighborhood, but my search has been in vain. Two neighbors had found turtles, but they were not my Stemi darling.
I.Am.So.Sad. However, gotta get over her.

Lately, these two words have been a favorite in my class. This phrase means something like “Go for it!” or “Keep fighting!”
This is actually Chinese, and I suspect a lot of people in Indonesia use it because we learn it from Taiwan and Chinese films.
Anyway, did you know that the literal meaning of these two words is: “Add oil!” ?
Yes, it does literally ask us to add more oil to make the fire (the spirit inside our heart) burn bigger and brighter!
Personally I really like how this phrase has a deep meaning and warms up my heart every time my beloved classmates shout it out!
For you guys who have endless paper to write, JIA YOU!
note: Chinese “J” is read like “C” (in Indonesia) and like “CH” (in English), if that makes sense at all :p

And I begin to imagine how it would feel
How it would work, how it would fit
If it was another person
Someone like the man in the phone just now, perhaps
With crisp laughter and patient voice
Or like the lady in the first floor
With loud friendly voice and laughter that comes from her heart
I begin to imagine and swim inside my head

His fingers were shiny from grease and they were always fidgeting. As I watched them I lost all other thoughts except: “What the hell am I doing here?”

It is funny how sometimes simple things push us so hard that we draw conclusions and make decisions that last a life time.
That’s it. I’m leaving.

I’m angry.
Hard to describe.
Perhaps like bubbling hot water.
Or like a heat wave.
I have no space to move.
I’m about to explode.

Hehe.. Beside that, I kind of believe this is just another hoax.
I never add anyone as my friends in ym, msn, friendster, or facebook if I don’t know him/her. What’s the point? But well, I do add some unknown friends if they send message and explain why they want to be in my friend network (for instance, if they were my classmates but I forgot).
How about you? How do you manage your virtual networking? Do you add EVERYONE so that everyone will see you have hundreds of friends (that you actually never contact)?
(I’m sorry for being a little sarcastic)
:p
Happy holiday everyone! May the joy of Christ be with you (and your friends) all

Memories
I have gone through five and twenty
And the paths I walk on
Are all oh so twisty
But one spot has left a bond
Now here I step again on
The ground where I met you
And memories are oh so fond
Like ghosts and shadows I see you
Empty hall but there you linger
Waiting to vanish once more
Sweet you but oh so bitter
I can never say to you: encore
I have gone through five and twenty
Your voice, your laughter, your calling me
You filled me who was once empty
Such a joy you are to me!

Missing some guys there, and then trying to make the memory a rhymed poem. Not too good, I guess. Give me Inputs please, on how to make poem with rhymes…
And for those in the poem, I miss each one of you.
Uncategorized | Comments (4)I finally missed him
Habis ngobrol sama temen-temen yang baru nonton Twilight, aku jadi kangen nonton biskop ama Kang Deden.
This is the first time I missed him after these couple of days away from each other.
Bisa tahan ngga ya…?
Anyway, for those who haven’t got a clue about what I’m talking about: My boyfriend, Dhenny a.k.a Kang Deden, has a new job in Kuta, Bali. (I’m in Surabaya, East Java for your information). He left for the new job on Nov 28, 2008 so it’s been less than a week but it feels like months. Yeah, I’m in the phase of adjusting myself to this new situation.
Do pray for him (and for us, too), friends. Thank you!
